Banking, marketing, sales… what sectors are hiring at degree level?

Schools were a little surprised, as were businesses. When The Bachelor began development, the plot was clear. This diploma had to meet the expectations of students who did not feel like undertaking lengthy studies and preferred to quickly join the labor market. Also those of companies, who regretted the lack of intermediate management profiles.

Bachelor’s graduates, well trained, with some internships and a little less demanding in terms of remuneration, met all their requirements. However, the students decided otherwise. Among the schools that appear in our ranking, the majority of graduates, sometimes more than three quarters, decide to continue their studies. “When they come to us, 40% of the students say they want to work after finishing their degree. In the end, only 20% do it,” confirms William Hurst, general director of EDC Paris.

Sales bonus

But what positions are open to those who want to work? “There are quite a few options!” », says Onélia Lamarre, director of corporate relations at Excelia, in La Rochelle (Charente Maritime). Of the 25% of graduates who choose a working life, 60% find work immediately. “The labor market is in tension. This pushes companies to expand their hiring scope.

The difference between a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree tends to blur,” he says. The shortage is particularly acute in commercial functions. Customer service representatives and salespeople are sought in all areas. In marketing, a bac + 3 can, for example, join the position of assistant product manager and then progress later.

Students from business and engineering schools are recruited before they graduate.

Regarding salaries, the schools contacted indicate an average remuneration of between 30,000 and 33,000 euros gross per year, which can increase if it includes a variable element, as is usually the case with salespeople. For comparison, the average remuneration of bac + 5 graduates from a business school is close to 40,000 euros gross. That’s a difference of about 20%. “The salary level depends a lot on the city where you are and the sector in which you work,” explains Onélia Lamarre. In finance, for example, it will be higher. »

Prioritize SMEs

Except that financial professions are difficult to open to single profiles. Aurélien Boucly, recruiting director at Robert Half, handles financial and management positions. However, he assures: “None of our clients ask us for a bac + 3 profile. This is not training designed for these professions. » Unless they are willing to move, other countries place less importance on original training.

On the other hand, banking (excluding, therefore, finance) and insurance value these recently graduated intermediate profiles very positively. “It would be a lie to say that you can find exactly the same jobs by studying two years less. But there are many offers on the table, especially in SMEs with between 100 and 250 employees. They are the ones who concentrate the bulk of the bin + 3 market,” adds William Hurst.

Experience above all

“Although they weigh in the balance, not everything comes from your studies! You have to love working, above all. And dare,” invites Thibault Breuillé. In 2018, after graduating in tourism management at the South Champagne Business School (formerly ESC Troyes), he found his first job on a farm in Ecuador. He had barely returned to France when the health crisis froze hiring in the tourism sector. “Once the pandemic was over, I quickly found a position with responsibility,” says Thibault Breuillé.

He currently runs the tourist office of Grand Autunois Morvan, in Autun (Saône-et-Loire). From now on he is the one who recruits. “When I see that a candidate started working young, it is an excellent sign for me. Whether it’s in your life, at a summer job, through internships and work-study programs, all of this is precious to me. »Above all, he advises students not to hold back and take advantage of their studies to try courses and increase their experiences. “I myself was full of certainties. My last internship, in South Africa, shook my life. He was no longer the same,” confesses Thibault Breuillé. Because if the diploma is important, the experience is worth something.
